How to Make Moccasins

Good day,

Someone posted on an egroup that he needed help making a pair of moccasins -- specifically, he asked for a source for a pattern to make moccasins. There are a couple of options here.

Three responders, including Donlyn Myers of Smoke and Fire, gave the best answer, which is to use your own feet as the pattern but get instructions from the wonderful NativeTech website (nativetech.org): http://www.nativetech.org/clothing/moccasin/moctext.html.

Donlyn pointed out that you need to know which tribe's moccasins you want, as they are different. That is important, of course, if you really want to do it right. If you just want a pair of "generic" moccasins, you can order the pre-cut materials with instructions (or finished mocs) from Smoke and Fire.

You might also try Michael Galban's DVD "CONSTRUCTING WOODLAND MOCCASINS" produced by RE Davis Company. This DVD is available from Track of the Wolf and can be ordered online at Track of the Wolf. Here is a link to the page showing the item: http://tinyurl.com/2zh9ao. (Thank you to John Neitz, 44th Regiment of Foot for that info.)

Another source for pre-made mocs: http://home.cshore.com/waaban/clothing.html.

LESSON LEARNED: When you are making moccasins, make sure you keep a PATTERN that works. Don't just make a pair and call it a day, because then you have to recreate your pattern.

Battle on Snowshoes 2007 Pictures

Good day,
Last Saturday, the 20th, we reenacted the 1757 Battle on Snowshoes (the lesser BoS) at Barbue Creek near Crown Point. It was a great day. For those of you who didn't get this info on the egroups:

First, I want to thank the organizers, hosts, and all participants for this year's Battle on Snowshoes. It was great fun being as close to the actual site as we were (or as close as we thought we could get), and we got so lucky with the weather as that was just about perfect in every way! I also want to thank those Brits who went French and I do hope you had a good day out in the snow to make up for your sacrifice -- I hope going French was better than staying at home! My sympathies to all of you who were planning to be there but couldn't make it.

Second, I've uploaded to a Yahoo photo album about 60 pictures from the weekend. With luck, this link will take you there.

Many of these photos were shot by Wade Stoner, so thank you to him for dying quickly as Lt. Kennedy (NOT Quintin this time, interestingly) and running around taking so many good pictures. A few are from Ed Radowitch, so thank you to him also.

YH&OS,
Sarah / Chauncey
